Benigno (Javier Cámara) is a male nurse, a mummy's boy, lonesome and deeply in love with Alicia (Leonor Watling), a young and healthy-looking ballerina, who has been in a coma for four years because of a traffic accident. He looks after her day and night in a convalescent home, while he does not stop talking to her, because he thinks that this could heal her. Parallel to this heartbreaking history full of absolute passion, Almodóvar counts the story of another couple, the story of the bullfighter Lydia (Rosario Flores) and a journalist called Marco (Darío Grandinetti) which, as a result of the ups and downs of the script, meets the other couple.

One day Benigno goes to a dance performance and is surprised by watching a man who is sitting next to him suddenly starts to cry without an apparent reason. Months after Benigno meets this man again in the hospital. His name is Marco and he is the companion to Lydia, his partner who is in a coma because having been gored by a bull. The tragedy is the common point that results in a great friendship.
